Yellow Brick Road Nursery is dedicated to taking extra special care of all your child’s early learning needs.  We realize each child is special and we will help and encourage your child to learn and develop.

The Nursery learning programmes are planned following the British Foundation Curriculum, Montessori and New Zealand Early Learning - Te Wharaiki.

Young children learn primarily through play, and more so when they feel safe and secure.

Good safe play is: -       planned and purposeful - challenging and interesting.

Personal and Social Development

This area focuses on your child’s social and emotional development on how to:

 Relate to other children

 Gain independence

 Establish self-confidence

 Show respect for others

 Learn self-respect

 Co-operate with other children and adults

 Function in a group beyond the family 

Other new learning areas will be explored, such as: 

 Initiating ideas and solving simple practical problems

 Realizing abilities to demonstrate independence in selecting activities and resources

 Understanding of dressing and personal hygiene.

 All children are encouraged to learn how to:

      Be sensitive to the needs and feelings of others

 Show respect for people of other cultures and beliefs.

 Take turns and share fairly

 Treat living things, property and the environment with care and concern.

Physical Development

Focuses on children’s: 

 Developing physical control

 Mobility - fine and gross motor skills

 Awareness of surrounding space

 Manipulative skills in indoor and outdoor environments

 Establishing positive attitudes towards a healthy and active way of life. 

To assist this learning experience, a range of small and large equipment for balancing and climbing is available. 

Your child will also learn to handle appropriate tools, objects, construction and malleable materials safely, confidently and with increasing control. 

Creative Development

Focuses on the development of the children’s: 

 Imagination

 Ability to communicate

 To express ideas and feelings in creative ways. 

The exploration of sound, color, texture, shape, form, and space in two and three dimensions, allows your child to learn and respond in a variety of ways to what he can see, hear or she, smell, touch and feel. 

Your child will show an increasing ability to use imagination, and to listen and observe through:

 Art

 Music

 Dance

 Stories

 Imaginative play

A varied range of materials, suitable tools, instruments and other resources are available to assist your child to express ideas and to communicate feelings and emotions. 

Language and Literacy
This focuses on your child developing the confidence and competence to cover important aspects of language development, and to provide the foundation for literacy. 
 

Your child will learn to: 

      Acquire competence in the spoken language – talking and listening

      Gain pre-reading and writing skills

      Know that words and pictures carry meanings

      Learn to associate sounds with patterns in rhymes, with syllables, and with words and letters

      Recognize his/her own name and other familiar words by learning to recognize letters of the alphabet by shape and sound. 

Participation in small and large groups where your child will learn to listen attentively and talk about experiences with the other children will assist in developing your child’s self confidence, these exercises include:

      Listening and responding to stories

      Singing songs

      Reciting nursery rhymes and poems

      Making up of own stories and taking part in role-play. 

Mathematics

This important aspects of mathematical understanding and the foundation for innumeracy are provided by focusing on achievement through practical and fun activities. 

Your child will learn to: 

      Describe, recognize and recreate shapes, positions, sizes, and quantities. 

Opportunity will be given to:

       Compare, sort, match, order, sequence and count using everyday objects.

The familiarity of numbers and counting will be learnt through:

       Rhymes, songs, stories and counting games. 

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

Your child will learn to explore and recognize features of living things, objects and events in the natural and man-made world and to look closely at similarities, differences and patterns. 

We will give your child the opportunities to learn about past, present and future, how things work, what things are made of and what they are for.  We will awaken the child’s curiosity by encouraging your child to talk and ask questions about experiences and their observations. 

We offer to your child opportunities to explore, to select materials and equipment, and to use skills such as cutting, joining, folding and building for a variety of purposes.  Appropriate technology will be used to support your child’s learning, such as the use of digital videos, and tape recorders.
