At Yellow Brick Road Nursery our families play a vital role in their child’s learning and development. Parents and caregivers have a wealth of valuable information and understandings regarding their children, and we recognise that they are their child’s first teacher.  A two-way communication strengthens the partnership between the Nursery and families through the following means:

Diaries – We value the use of photography as a great tool for recording children’s play and learning.  Each day photographs are taken in the classroom and during outdoor play; these images highlight the children’s day and are gathered together forming a fortnightly diary which we love to share with our families.  (NB fortnightly can at times be extended to three or more weeks depending upon holidays and other events.)

Topic Letters – These letters are emailed to parents, outlining the coming topic and activities that have been planned within each classroom.   Our planning keeps each child

Parent Teacher Meetings – Twice a year teachers take the time to sit with parents during scheduled meetings to discuss the progress their child has made throughout the year.  This strengthens the vital link between the home environment and the Nursery.  We understand that the parents are a child’s first teacher and therefore feel this communication with parents is very important.

General Parent News Letters – Upcoming Nursery events and relevant topics are communicated through our parent newsletters.

Health Related News Letters – These letters are emailed to parents on a regular basis with updates from media and from the Ministry of Social Affairs identifying any current health related issues and topics.  We take the health, well-being and safety of children very seriously and we keep informed of all health related discussions of which we feel it is our role to share with parents.

Birthday Parties

All the children love to have their turn to enjoy their ‘Nursery Birthday’.  The most important part of this special occasion for the children is to have their own birthday cake, balloons, to be sung “Happy Birthday” to, to blow out the candles and of course to ‘eat the cake’!

You are always welcome to supply more birthday items and activities for your child’s birthday if you wish, however, please keep in mind that ‘party bags’ filled with confectionery can have an adverse affect on the children’s happiness as the children will end up consuming large amounts of food colouring which is used in many of the popular children’s foods, these colourants can cause temper tantrums and disruptive behaviour in young children.

Gulf News November 2002 “The research, in Food Magazine, confirms that additives in such products as Smarties,  fizzy drinks and other coloured sweets can spark behavioural changes in up to a quarter of toddlers.  Now scientists and food campaigners are calling for a ban on the additives.

For decades concerns expressed by parents have been dismissed by food manufacturers and officials as anecdotal.  But after the Government-sponsored study on a group of 227 three-year olds, scientists at the Asthma and Allergy Research Centre concluded significant changes in hyperactive behaviour could be produced by the removal of colourings and other additives from a child’s diet.

They went further, saying, “Benefit would accrue for all children from such a change in their diet”

The Food Commission said the names and “E” numbers to avoid are: Tartrazine (E102), Sunset yellow (E110), Carmoisine (E122), Ponceau 4R (E124) and Sodium benzoate (E211).”

Please also keep in mind the safety of ‘party gift bags’ the gift items must comply to the International Child Safety Standards and be age-appropriate.
